Pinakothek der Moderne

The Pinakothek der Moderne is the largest museum in Germany devoted to art, design, architecture and works on paper of the 20th and 21st centuries. It houses an outstanding collection of postwar and contemporary American art. Works by American artists like Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg and Robert Motherwell are presented alongside those of European artists like Lucio Fontana, Joseph Beuys, Georg Baselitz, Arnulf Rainer and Blinky Palermo. Room installations by Donald Judd, Dan Flavin and Fred Sandback make Munich a center for American Minimal art.

Center for American Art

The cross-cultural dialogue between Europe and the USA has exerted an exceptionally formative influence on artistic production since 1945. The collection of the Pinakothek der Moderne is well-known for its focus on this transatlantic creative exchange. With the opening of the Brandhorst Museum in spring 2009, Munich will substantially strengthen this emphasis. The direct proximity of the Brandhorst Collection to the Pinakothek der Moderne will create a museum complex for 20th and 21st century art whose convergence promises to be unique in all of Europe. Munich is the only place this side of the Atlantic where art lovers can find such an abundance of important works by Warhol, Twombly and the American Minimalists.
